Things To Do In Terre Haute!

There’s lots to do in Terre Haute, Indiana, and its surrounding communities. Picturesque countryside mixes with urban cities to provide lots of shopping, restaurants, outdoor recreation, culture and festivals.

Shopping

As the heart of a much larger sales area, Terre Haute's MSA attracts shoppers 50 or more miles in every direction.

Menards, Big Lots, and lots of privately-owned boutiques around Plaza North Shopping Center on the Northside complement Meadows Shopping Centre on Terre Haute’s eastside for residents to enjoy neighborhood shopping. The south side’s retail hub features Honey Creek Mall, Honey Creek East, Honey Creek Commons, Furniture Row, Town South & Riverside Plazas with over a hundred stores. Old Navy, Gander Mountain, Kohls, Linens-n-Things, and TJMaxx are just a few of the newest additions. This area is conveniently located amongst theatres and restaurants near the intersection of I-70 and US-40. New shopping areas are always being added—including a new development off I-70 and SR-46 to further serve eastside residents.

Restaurants & Motels

Terre Haute is home to over 1700 hotel rooms and more than 200 restaurants that cater not only to the local economy, but also to a very stable tourism industry. Lots of local “joints” bring character and charm to local neighborhoods for casual and fine dining, while recognizable restaurants like Applebees (now on the north and south-sides), Olive Garden, and Ruby Tuesdays are popular for everyone.

Local history and flavor offer the discerning diner mid- and high-priced dining experiences in historical Terre Haute Buildings. Moggers offers casual dining as a part of the old Terre Haute Brewing Company, while Stables offers fine-dining in the old, well, stables. Nectar Restaurant & Tannins Wine Bar offers something new, while Logan’s Steakhouse or Black Angus are Terre Haute traditions. Lots of dining and restaurant information can be found here.

Outdoor Recreation

Terre Haute features several community attractions sure to please all. Residents and visitors alike can take in the beautiful scenery along the Wabash River. The river is a popular recreational site offering fishing and boating, and rich in history as the site of Paul Dresser’s boyhood home (the writer of “Banks of the Wabash”-our state song).

Dirt track auto racing at the Terre Haute Action Track, area sports, the Covered Bridge Festival in nearby Parke County, and dozens of other festivals, parks, golf courses and shopping provide lots to do.

Enjoy a day on the links at private courses like Idle Creek Golf & Country Club, Geneva Hills or Hulman Links, and on public courses like Ray Park or Marks Par 3. If golf isn’t your thing, check out the areas’ parks. Terre Haute city parks, Clay & Vigo County parks, Illinois and Indiana state parks offer camping, hiking, fishing, biking, canoeing and more.

The Banks of the Wabash festival, the Artsfest, and nearby Corey Apple Festival, Covered Bridge Festival, and Clinton’s Little Italy Festival provide fun all year through for the young and the young-at-heart.

Don’t forget our ever-growing Heritage Trail too. As another rails-to-trails initiative, this paved trail takes bikers, runners, and walkers from Indiana State University downtown, out to Rose-Hulman with a parking area and trailhead off US-40.

Culture, Theatres, & Music

A Reader's Digest poll ranked Terre Haute 45th out of 301 cities as the best communities for raising a family. The Sheldon Swope Art Museum, the Community Theater of Terre Haute, The Children’s Science & Technology Museum, the Children’s Theatre, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, ISU & Dreiser Theatre and the Vigo County Historical Society & Museum invite you to spend a lazy afternoon learning local history or an evening enjoying a local artistic production.

Interested in something a little more casual? Check out Terre Haute’s movie theatres. Great deals can be found at the historic Indiana Theatre, while new release movies can be seen at Honey Creek West and Showplace12 – both Kerasotes theatres.

There’s lots to see and do in Terre Haute. For more information, visit the Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Vigo County Public Library, or request one of

Real Estate Tips
Selling Your Home >Scents and Home Sense

Prospective buyers may react to the way a home smells. Cigarette smoke, strong disinfectants, insecticides, kitty litter, and french fries have all been known to dampen the enthusiasm of buyers who might otherwise respond positively to a house that would meet their needs.

Be sure that your home passes the sniff test when it is on the market. Many people have a particular reaction to smoke and pet odors, so consider a temporary smoking ban inside your home while it is on the market. If you have a cat box, be meticulous about cleaning it. If your new puppy has ruined a chair, replace the stained chair with a spot-free one.

There are cleaning services which specialize in stain and odor removal. They may suggest carpet steaming and other techniques to remove the offensive smell. Even if buyers are themselves smokers or have pets of their own, they will react differently to the same odors lingering in a home they are considering.
